(NEXSTAR) – Rookie center fielder Denzel Clarke of the Athletics robbed Los Angeles Angels' Nolan Schanuel of a home run with a wild catch on Monday night. The Angels had one out and no one on in the bottom of the first when Schanuel launched a 1-0 splitter from A’s pitcher Grant Holman toward left-center. Clarke raced back and planted his right foot about halfway up the wall in a perfectly timed leap and grabbed the top for support. He extended the upper half of his body several feet beyond the wall and made a backhand grab with his left arm fully stretched out. In a video clip shared by the MLB, Clarke could be seen celebrating his catch while both Schanuel and Holman looked on somewhat stunned. “That… is absolutely insane,” one fan wrote on X in response to the clip. “Instantly one of the top 5 catches at the wall, all-time. Maybe much, much higher than top 5, actually.” For his catch, the Athletics recognized Clarke for what they called the “Electric Play of the Week.” He also earned the same honor last week, after making a backhand grab in a game against the Orioles, that time while running head-on into the wall. Clarke, 25, debuted with the team on May 23. Originally from Canada, he most recently played with the Triple-A Las Vegas Aviators before being called up to the A’s. The Angels, however, ended up beating the Athletics 7-4 on Monday night, thanks in part to a homer late in the game from Jo Adell, which drove in three runs.
