(NEXSTAR) - Lauren Brzozowski, a US Olympic hopeful, is training with Team USA in Italy as she transitions from track and field to bobsledding. Brzozowski, who specialized in the 200m and 400m during her track career, turned to bobsledding after COVID-19 canceled her meets. She has been with the USA Bobsled Team for about six years and is currently working on her skills as both a pilot and a brakeman. "I was previously in an environment against some of the best in the world out in Europe," Brzozowski said. "So, losing that all of a sudden in the blink of an eye made me want to get back in the lane next to the best people in the world." Brzozowski's journey into bobsledding began when USA Bobsled moved their tryouts online, allowing her to submit her qualifications remotely. "You submit like a 40-meter dash and a broad jump," she explained. Despite being new to the sport, Brzozowski has found camaraderie among her teammates. "I think everyone just comes here knowing like, this is not your first choice of a sport. But that’s kind of the beauty of it," she noted. Brzozowski has been a pilot for Team USA, driving sleds and competing for World Cup spots. Although she narrowly missed qualifying for the Olympics as a pilot, she remains hopeful as a reserve and is trying her hand at brakeman duties. She also spoke about the challenges she faces due to a learning disability similar to short-term memory loss, which has required her to learn the sport in unique ways. Brzezinski's journey from track athlete to bobsledder showcases her resilience and adaptability, as she continues to strive for Olympic success with the support of her teammates and community.
